The propaganda advertised by the government was a way of keeping people quiet. We can view this as going against the ideas of social networking. If speaking the truth about government issues and plans of attack are frowned upon, people may be less likely to be social with each other. You may speak of whatever you wish, just do not speak about the world or anything related to our country!
i like where this one is going.. it gives a 21st century look to the idea of espionage. countries can use social networking against the nations they plan to attack to attempt to gain valuable information. people have tendency to reveal information online that they would most like not reveal elsewhere.
ReplyDeleteI think this is an interesting approach to something in WWII. I can imagine our own country doing this soon when we are inevitably pushed to WWIII. The thing that sucks about social networks is information is VERY likely to leak since people are less likely to think that someone is listening to their private conversation on facebook while someone could easily hack into someone's account or computer and "listen" to important information.
ReplyDeleteFreedom of speech is an illusion. We still have many restrictions today on what we can and cant say. Some things we say may result in charges for "treason" or "disorderly conduct." Also we have laws such as the Patriot Act which infringe on our privacy to further control what we say.
ReplyDeleteMesche, this is sooo true. Especially in the present time. Things are this way mostly because of September 11th. You do have to watch what you say, especially if it has to do with the President or terrorism. It does definitely infringe on our privacy. Big brother is always watching. Your post really made me think. Thank you for posting. Mary Ann Reday.
ReplyDeleteWord does spread very quickly on the internet. We should always be cautious about what we say and write. Especially about our country or others.
ReplyDeleteTHis is interesting, Keep your intimate thoughts to yourselves as to not destroy our nation. Were there spies at my parents dinner table? could 've been, but not likely. I do find it a little scary to think of how big of a war that was and it was fought over seas but word of mouth back then was still very powerful.
ReplyDeleteIn today's society with all the different means available to us in which we can 'speak our mind', we need to be very careful what we say. An example of this is the Central Bucks teacher whose blogging about her students became a national news story. She is now the victim of a current day witch hunt. Do we really have freedom of speech?
ReplyDeleteIn todays world many people say the wrong things and get in trouble for them, even if they dont mean it in a cretin way. anything that is said on the web or message sent on a phone can be traced and can get someone in trouble, with the whole freedom to speak saying, its not all true because if you say the wrong word it can land you in big trouble. big brother is always watching.
ReplyDeleteWhat happened to freedom of speech? Oh, you can speak out just watch what you say? I'm confused, advocates for just cause have to expose the truth to heighten awareness of unjustness. The only reason we have to be careful what we say is, because the individuals that are doing wrong are fearful of being exposed. In the case of the Bucks County teacher, she knew what she was doing, I believe that she just did not care.
ReplyDeleteThis would be impossible today. It's so easy to tap into phones and internet sites. Having a private like now isn't as easy as it seems. Freedom of Speech does exist, but this doesn't guarantee that people won't use your word against you.
