Friendster ---> Myspace ---> Facebook ---> Twitter ---> LINKEDIN!
Social networks evolve everyday. At first they started as ways for friends to re-associate with old long lost friends, families to keep in touch, and to just see what was going on in other peoples lives. But once again they have evolved. From my previous post some of you may be under the impression that I dislike the way social networks have encapsulated our lives, but that was until I discovered LinkedIn.com. It is a social network for business professionals to connect with others in their field. It is a place to post your online resume, and to network yourself to other professionals. It provides a place where you do not have to be concerned with the stuff other people say and do (like on facebook), you can be free to browse for colleagues, friends, or people you have not met that share the same passions for your fields of interest as you do. I urge everyone to take a few moments and browse around LinkedIn, I am sure you will see that upsides of it just as I have.

As a professional, I joined LinkedIn several years ago with the purpose of getting my resume out there. This social network is exactly what Joe describes, it is a place for professionals. You can create a profile, post your resume, enter in a summary of your work related experiences and broaden your network. You also have the opportunity to provide feedback on people that you have worked with, and have worked for you. LinkedIn is a fantastic tool to search for potential employment, with the hopes of knowing someone within the potential company that could get your resume in the right hands. It worked for me!!
ReplyDeleteGreat post Joe.
This seems like the "professional facebook". From what i see, it can be really useful to professionals. It can help people get jobs and so on. Keeping in touch with old employers is always a good idea too just in case we need recommendations or so.
ReplyDeleteGood post! Informative!
I have had a profile on Linked In for several years. It is the only “Social Network” site that I have a profile on. It is used by professionals for the expressed purpose of networking in the business world. There are no games, or tweets, or personal chats. There are good resumes, work experience, and skill sets. The profiles are very professional and I use it to keep up with former clients and employees. I have used it when hiring employees and getting out our corporate message. Linked In is a “Social Network” site but it has a niche scope and is not necessarily fun.
