The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly
Communication has changed dramatically throughout many millenniums. From scratching pictures on stones, walls, in the sand, or anywhere, to communicating vocally, by phone, and on the internet, communication has transformed. For the most part, talking face-to-face has been the way to communicate for a very long time. Writing letters has also been a big part of communicating. But it wasn't until the recent couple centuries that it has changed dramatically, and especially so in the past two decades.
What's this new form of communication that has been sweeping the nation? It is none other than social networking. If you're a teen or in your twenties, you definitely know what social networking is all about. Anyone older probably has only heard of it, and could, quite frankly, care less. Pushing buttons on a telephone and calling someone on a land line works just as fine. For all of those out there who have caught onto the social networking wave, you might not realize that it isn't as much of a "new thing" as it is a "change" in the way we communicate.
Do you accept this change? For better or for worse, we can't stop what is happening. It can be a very useful tool, and yet, at the same time it has led to many problems. This is why social networking is what I call "the good, the band, and the ugly." It's a little bit of everything.
This first section of the blog is specifically designed to peek into the past and key in on communication when it was more primitive, and not digital. It's vital to see where you've been, where you're at, and where you're headed in any aspect in life. That is why following articles will feature social networking and communication now, as well as what to look for into the future.
excellent start Tyler! this is exactly how we need to be going about this. good work. comments to follow on the article
ReplyDeleteJoe, I do agree with you. Technology is always changing and we adapt to it. Inventions and ideas made technology change. Science also helped technology become what it is today in our society. Without technology we would not be the society we are today. Technology is making things more and more easier for us. Im lokking foward to seeing the future.
ReplyDeleteThis is a good post Tyler. I agree with most of it. Social Networks such as facebook are much more popular these days, and they are the way to communicate in modern times. The part I do not agree with is that older people do not care about this new technology and form of communication. I am older and I go on facebook everyday to talk to family members and friends I do not always get to see. More and more of my friends I went to school with are starting to have facebook accounts. When I first got this account there were not many, but everyday more and more of them are showing up. I think this shows that older people are adapting to this new technology. Thank you for the great post. Mary Ann Reday.
ReplyDeleteThe good, the bad and the ugly, is a good title for social networks. The good is for those who use these sites maturely and respectfully. The bad and ugly is those who are purposely out to hurt or cause harm to others. Unfortunately, there are young children not being mature and are greatly being affected negatively. For those kids, the parents need to step up and try to know what your child is doing on the internet.
ReplyDeleteThe good, the bad, and the ugly is a perfect title for Social Networks. There is a lot of good that comes out of them, people reconnecting with old acquaitances, keeping in touch, and instant sharing of information. But too much it is becoming bad and ugly. People spending hours on end on facebook and their mini games, getting addicted to websites. Not to mention all the security issues with sharing your personal data online. We always care so much about our personal data yet we are so quick to give it up to a web site. Once our information is out on the net we have no way of controlling the data or who access the data. It's an ugly online world we live in.
ReplyDeleteI completely agree. As technology evolves that continue to make our lives easier and easier, our formal face to face communications lessen and lessen. We have all become so accustomed and used to our current advancements in technology, that I'm not sure if any society can or will become more "face to face" communication wise.
ReplyDeleteIt’s always interesting to look back at the past when people just used drawings to talk on walls. Now we have countless methods of communication and each advancement of technology really changes culture because it changes the way we do things and how we think.
ReplyDeleteJoe, i have to agree with you that if it wasn't for technology nothing would have happen. with the evolution of technology we would be no where were we are now. also without the use of science in technology we would still be stuck in the 1960's. technology is what will make use live the life we do now and in the future.
ReplyDeleteJoe, the world of facebook and tweeter is very intriguing to me. And as an older person I would love to become a member of facebook, so that i can reacquaint, with childhood friends, former classmates and family members. This is the part of the social networking I would love to experience. But, I just don't have the time.
ReplyDeleteYet, on the other I do not like the negativity that stems from this social networking when it is use for evil. Also, facebook and tweeting can be addictive, my daughter when we are out for dinner is constantly on facebook. In my opinion this is rude. There is a time and place for everything. I'm all for the new technolgy, but let's use some etiquette when using facebook and tweeter.
Tyler, great opening paragraph on your post. I agree with you that social networking has positive and negative points. I am of the 'older generation' that you speak of and I personally use Facebook, texting, e-mail, etc. I find these communication tools to be very valuable to me as well as useful. However, I have to be careful not to get to swept up in it and allow it to be a focal point in my life. My biggest concern with social networking is for the younger children. They can fall victim to scams and predators. Parental supervision is very important.
ReplyDeleteI agree with you about "Communication has changed dramatically throughout many millenniums." for the social networking, it bring us a lot of easiness and convinous. but I always pay extra caution not to post person information and pic.
ReplyDeleteTyler, communication is an excellent topic to discuss since it a vital part of everyone’s existence and it has sifted radically from prehistoric times to nowadays under the influence of technology. The main tool of communication, as you described in your post, has become a social network. Because of its convenience, simplicity of use availability it involves more and more people every day. I created my accounts on Facebook and Vkontakte (Russian social network) a few years ago, but I do not use them very often. Sometimes I utilize the social networks for communication with my friends that are far away, but as I do not think that it is the best and most secure way of communicating, I prefer Skype for these purposes. It offers clear quality video calling that gives the impression face-to-face conversation with members of my family and f. Skype also provides better privacy and confidentiality than social networks to its users.
