What was the first chat room? No one documented when the first one was invented because it's always been a part of culture. How's that you might ask? Well, a chat room is basically a bunch of people getting together, having a few drinks, and talking. You didn't need a computer or Facebook to do that. Anyone who associates with others is chatting, and while you're at it, give 'em some good food and get 'em liquored up. It's much more social and enjoyable then sitting by yourself, burning a hole in your brain in front of the computer like I am doing right now typing this darn thing.
So, here's to getting outside, getting some fresh air, and throwing the computers away. Here are some pictures of "real" chat rooms, not the fake crap we get from the computer, even if we think we're so cool talking on the computer and updating our wall. That's just a bunch of bull crap, doesn't anyone have anything better to do? I wish I did, but I'm currently talking to you Blogger viewers.
Anyway, enjoy the pictures.
Cheers to that. While it's cool that in chatrooms we can easily setup business/school related assignments and activities, or share/distribute digital photos and what not, but meeting and chatting face to face for fun social events. Would I rather sit on a computer to watch a live stream of a game and discussing who's going to be MVP this game, or do I want to watch the game at my friends house and we all argue with each other who's going to be the winner? The internet just can't beat that feeling.
ReplyDeleteHi Tyler, you are so right, chat rooms have always been in our culture. They just have evolved as our society has evolved. I'm old fashioned and I prefer to chat face to face. That way I can not only hear you, but I can observe your non-verbal expressions, which often speaks more honestly. I'm aware that times are changing, and that I must adapt to the changes technolgy has brought into my life.
ReplyDeleteTyler, great observation. For all that technology has improved our lives, it is most important that people stay connected in the physical world. Unfortunately, social skills are being lost due to the over-use of social networking. It is more fun to hang out with friends over dinner and drinks then to sit by yourself in front of a computer typing to someone you don't really know.
ReplyDeleteGeraldine, i agree that chatting with friends in person is more fun, compared being alone behind a computer screen. I like how you brought up a simple idea, bars and restaurants where the first chatrooms happend. Now, who ever things of chatrooms we think of aim or facebook or any other social network sites.
ReplyDeleteLOL, I thought that was really funny because people should get out more. Even though I have a facebook, I'm hardly on it because sometimes I think its a waste of time. But at the same time, it is faster and its convient. Sometimes, I just sit and think what is the world coming too with so much technology.
ReplyDeleteLOL This is a funny post. Computers are a great addition to one's life but should not rule it! I am tired of technology preventing people from living life. Like you said, "So, here's to getting outside, getting some fresh air, and throwing the computers away." Here Here!!
ReplyDeleteGreat post Tyler. I never imagined chat rooms as anything else besides something on the computer. It seems that with the evolution of technology, people are changing with it. I would love to just go to a room with random people in it and see what kinds of conversations would spark. I never been inside an internet chat room because my parents forbid me to go to one as a kid.
ReplyDeleteThis is a great post. It is much better to have a real chat with people when they are sitting in the same room as you. I don’t like to chat on the computer. I’d rather meet you somewhere or even have a conversation on the phone. We all need to get off of these computers and go enjoy the real world.
ReplyDeleteTyler, it is very interesting article that changed my perception of chat rooms. I was thinking that chart rooms are only online spaces where people gather in order to discuss hobbies and interests through instant text massages. I thought that the first chart rooms appeared in 1980’s and was directly connected with computers. After reading you post ant taking a look at the pictures, I realized that “real” chat rooms were very pleasant, enjoyable, and sincere many decades ago and cannot be even compared with the contemporary ones.
ReplyDeleteGood post! Anyway, besides it being funny, it's true. I mean how can we have a room on the computer? It only makes sense to do it in person, in a real room. I prefer face to face rather than over computer any day, but with how this world is, I'm sure this will become uncommon.
